Council tables intersection upgrade

The upgrade was not a budget item.

City Council tabled the request for a decision on the West Chestermere Drive and Station Way Intersection Upgrade during the May 17 Regular Meeting of Council.
City administration was directed to provide council with a cost estimate for the implementation of traffic management strategies on the West Chestermere Drive and Station Way and John Morris way intersection.
The cost estimates for conventional construction was presented to council in April, and administration was directed to gather data on the cost for modules.
The cost to complete the reconfiguration of West Chestermere Drive lanes was $115,500 for conventional, or $249,700 for modules.
The cost to complete the signalization was $359,100 for conventional and for modules.
“Signalization can be delayed until warranted by traffic volumes,” Sr. Manager, Infrastructure Management Navi Kaur said.
“Using the modules, the sections would have to be customized to what we need at the intersection, they would have to make those modules fit into the area, unless we have a similar intersection somewhere else in the city, otherwise, it’s very site-specific,” she said.
“There are other temporary solutions that aren’t as attractive as this, that can allow us to determine if we’re getting a positive impact before we spend that amount of money,” Mayor Jeff Colvin said.
City administration recommended that council approve the first option of the reconfiguration of West Chestermere Drive lanes using the conventional construction and adjust the capital budget to accommodate the cost of $115,500 to complete the work.
However, council was given an alternative option where council could choose to take no action and revisit the request for decision as part of the 2023 budget discussion.
“It’s not a budgeted item, because the budget was approved before this item was presented,” Kaur said. “We can get the work done this construction season, it will be tight, but we can try it if council wants to go ahead, everything will have to be outsourced.”
